Eligibility & Making Changes

Let’s Get You Covered

We know benefits can feel like a lot. That’s why we’re breaking things down in plain language, so you can understand what you’re eligible for, when your coverage starts, and how to enroll without second-guessing yourself.

Whether you’re brand-new, switching roles, or just figuring it all out—this page is for you.

Who’s Eligible?

  • Working 32 hours or more per week?
You’re eligible for the full benefits lineup: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), and more. You can also cover your eligible dependents and even add on extra coverage through voluntary benefits.
  • Working 30 or 31 hours per week?
You’re eligible for Medical coverage and an HSA. Your eligible dependents can be covered too.
  • Working as a temp or intern?
You’re eligible for Medical coverage and an HSA.
  • Casual or on call worker?
You’re eligible for legally required benefits only.

Eligibile Dependents

  • Spouse: Legally married spouse only. A $125 surcharge applies per pay period if your spouse has access to other employer-sponsored medical coverage. Common-law spouses are not eligible.

    • Children of a covered spouse or domestic partner (if plan allows) are also eligible
    • Newborns must be enrolled within 30 days of birth

What documents do I need to provide to cover a dependent on my benefits?

  • Newborn (<6 months): Proof of Birth Verification; Birth Certificate required by 6 months
  • Children (>6 months): Birth Certificate, legal adoption/guardianship papers, or IRS-approved tax return
  • Disabled Children (26+): Birth Certificate + documentation of disability (may require annual verification)
  • Stepchildren: Marriage Certificate + Birth Certificate or IRS-approved tax return

Note: SSN cards are not required but encouraged.
30-Day Rule: Dependents must be enrolled in Workday and documentation submitted within 30 days of hire or qualifying life event.

When Does Coverage Start?

Here’s when your benefits will start—as long as you enroll within 30 days of your hire date and have your onboarding tasks in Workday completed:

Your Situation Your Benefits Start
Department heads, nurses, therapists, and Service Center/Cornet employees First of the month after your hire date
Other employees of an Ensign Services-affiliated company First of the month after 60 days of employment
Example: Hired on May 15? Enroll by June 14, coverage starts August 1
Newly benefit-eligible due to a status change First of the month after your status changes, unless you become eligible on the first of the month, then benefits begin on the same day

When Does Coverage End?

Download the Benefits Summary for Termination of Active Employee Benefits to see when each type of coverage ends. If your employment ends in the first half of the month, your final paycheck will include all premiums due for that month. If you’re eligible for COBRA, you’ll also receive information on how to continue your coverage.

Life Happens: Making Changes after a Life Event

Life doesn’t follow a benefits calendar, so you can make changes outside of Open Enrollment, but only if you have a Qualified Life Event (QLE).

  • Getting married or divorced
  • Giving birth to or adopting a child
  • Gaining or losing other health coverage
  • A dependent gaining/losing coverage
  • Job changes that affect benefits
  • Death of a dependent

Here’s what to do:

  1. Log in to Workday and make your changes within 30 days of the event.
  2. Submit proof (like a birth certificate or coverage loss letter).
  3. Upload docs right in Workday before submitting your changes or email them to benefits@ensignservices.net.
  4. Your updated coverage begins the 1st of the month following the date of election.

Don’t wait too long. Your changes can’t go through without documentation!
